Demonstration against the modification of the constitution in Libreville: Steve Ilahou spokesperson for the fight for democracy
Libreville, January 7, 2025 – This morning, in front of the doors of the Constitutional Court in Libreville, several dozen activists responded to the call of Steve Ilahou, founder of the Gabon en action movement, friend and supporter of the Gabon 2025 collective, which he represented. A demonstration full of symbolism and strong demands marked this day when democracy and national sovereignty were at the heart of the debates.
A letter to denounce a denial of democracy
In the humid and hot air of Libreville, Steve Ilahou, surrounded by his supporters, appeared this morning before the constitutional court to deliver a hard-hitting letter. This document, written on behalf of Gabon en action and the Gabon 2025 collective, points to "the unilateral modification of the constitution after its validation by referendum" and accuses the authorities of a deliberate withdrawal from the duty to protect the national heritage, going so far as to "call into question the reasons for the existence of the Gabonese people on their soil."
In this letter, Mr. Ilahou highlights the dangers of a governance that he considers disconnected from popular aspirations, while calling for a patriotic surge. "This is not only a political fight, but a moral duty for all Gabonese," he declared, galvanizing his audience.
A mobilization that unites all the way to the top
The demonstration brought together citizens from diverse backgrounds, but all united by the same goal: to defend democracy. With placards in hand and protest slogans chanted in unison, the participants made their voices heard to demand more justice and transparency in the management of public affairs.
Following this symbolic demonstration, the echoes of this mobilization seem to have stirred the country's political spheres. Several emblematic opposition figures, including Pierre Claver Moussavou, Albert Ondo Ossa, Alain Claude Billie Bié Nzé and Ali Onanga, have announced a joint press conference. This will be held tomorrow morning, at 10:30, at the Radisson Blu in Libreville, with the participation of international media. It will notably discuss the changes in the constitution highlighted by Gabon 2025, Gabon en Action and all the movements that adhere to this fight.
And now ?
This day may mark a turning point in citizen mobilization in Gabon. With Steve Ilahou as their standard-bearer, the demonstrators hope to revive a democratic debate that they consider stifled. The conference scheduled for tomorrow
